A challenging climb up but a very rewarding summit view. I did this hike about 25 years ago with about 6 friends. Feel free to put me back in your pocket and concentrate on the thousands of calories you’re about to burn. Exit the parking lot to your left (back toward civilization, away from the campground), and turn left onto Woodland Valley Road. The hike is steep except for about a 1 mile stretch in the middle where you begin to think “Man, that first part was hard, but at least it’s pretty flat now.” That was not a lasting feeling. There are great views into the Woodland Valley, of Wittenberg and Cornell and Panther and Giant Ledge. Just did this hike yesterday! Food, gas, and other supplies can be found in the nearby communities of Phoenicia and Boiceville. (Then you can volunteer, donate, or shop, depending on your mood.). When I was finally ready to say “screw it” and head back, finally the opening in front of me showed an absolutely amazing view of the reservoir, the Catskills and beyond. If you don’t care about peak bagging, its not really a destination in itself because it’s overgrown and there is not much to really see besides a peak at Wittenburg. Trail Maintainer Position. The trail will descend first gently then more moderately toward the Phoenicia East Branch Trail. Along the unmarked path, you will enter state land marked by yellow paint on trees and large slabs of rock crossing the trail. The view from the ledge on Wittenberg Mountain is spectacular and the hike is in high demand in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. Immediately you will cross a bridge over Woodland Valley Creek.
