A challenging climb up but a very rewarding summit view. I did this hike about 25 years ago with about 6 friends. Exit the parking lot to your left (back toward civilization, away from the campground), and turn left onto Woodland Valley Road. The hike is steep except for about a 1 mile stretch in the middle where you begin to think “Man, that first part was hard, but at least it’s pretty flat now.” That was not a lasting feeling. There are great views into the Woodland Valley, of Wittenberg and Cornell and Panther and Giant Ledge. Just did this hike yesterday! Food, gas, and other supplies can be found in the nearby communities of Phoenicia and Boiceville. (Then you can volunteer, donate, or shop, depending on your mood.). When I was finally ready to say “screw it” and head back, finally the opening in front of me showed an absolutely amazing view of the reservoir, the Catskills and beyond. If you don’t care about peak bagging, its not really a destination in itself because it’s overgrown and there is not much to really see besides a peak at Wittenburg. Trail Maintainer Position.
